GEEK PICK: Ben 10 Omni-Launch Battle Figures

Stay on target

We’ll talk about the Ben 10 Omni-Launch Battle Figures in a minute. But first I have a lot of weirdly strong opinions about Ben 10. When it first premiered I resented the show for being Cartoon Network’s attempt at replacing the recently departed Teen Titans, which ended on a beautifully and purposefully ambiguous note screwing up my young emotions. Ben 10 looked like Cartoon Network trying to gin up its own in-house superhero franchise without relying on existing properties.

And then I spent the next decade totally baffled that Ben 10 was not only still on the air but growing at an alarming rate! What started as a show about a boy using a space watch to transform into aliens and battle other aliens had completely disappeared up its own butt. It was now a full-on cosmic epic with like four different spin-offs shows, a couple of live-action movies, a time skip to Ben’s more serious teenage years, and all of this other complicated lore from embarrassingly impressive comic book writers including the late great Dwayne McDuffie.

Two years ago everything came full circle with the simplified Ben 10 reboot bringing the franchise back down to its kid-friendly roots, presumably angering nostalgic older fans. Ben 10: Omni-Tricked, a new DVD of that show with 16 episodes and a 44-minutes special, releases September 18. If you or a child you know enjoys this new Ben 10 without all that old baggage, why not check out the Ben 10 Omni-Launch Battle Figures ($30) toys?

As I said earlier, Ben 10’s big gimmick is that Ben Tennyson (yes) uses a sci-fi watch called the Omnitrix to transform himself into different aliens to battle villains. He picks the right creature for the occasion like the buff Four Arms, pyrokinetic Heatblast, and speedy XLR8. This watch won’t alter your DNA but does have you battling with different monsters. Included are three different alien figurines. Players fold them up tight, insert them into the watch face, and then press the button to launch them at each other, the included target poster, or your jaded co-workers.

As someone who writes a lot about video games, I admire how much mileage toys can get out from a hook as blunt as “shoot aliens out of your watch.” The Ben 10 Omni-Launch Battle Figures are neat toys and the next chapter of my weird outsider relationship with the franchise.
